Invitation to a worksite
Dismantling light poles E42-A16
April 2022

Thanks to the SPW Mobilité et Infrastructures de Mons and the Mobix company, the MuSé visited the E42-A16 motorway in the direction of Tournai, near Hautrage.
This visit was prepared... In fact, I had to be equipped to be accepted on the site. As a reminder, this work is being carried out on a motorway that is always busy with lorries and cars.

Fluorescent waistcoats, helmets and safety shoes are a must!

This major project is part of the modernisation of public lighting on roads and motorways (LUWA), with the switch from sodium vapour to LED technology.

The LUWA plan can be consulted here:

These reinforced concrete masts were installed in the mid-1970s and support an RX Schréder H-shaped luminaire equipped with 8 low-pressure sodium vapour lamps of 180 watts (originally).
How are they dismantled?

Step 1:
The lamps are removed from the lamp post, as is the bowl. The control gear at the foot of the pole is also removed.

2 Stabilisation du poteau.jpg

Stage 2:
Using a crane, the pole is stabilised in a vertical position.

Stage 3:
The pole is cut at its base using a hydraulic jaw. The first poles were cut using a disc cutter. As this option was too time-consuming, it was decided to switch to crushing.

Stage 4:
The severed mast is gradually lowered to the ground, level with the central berm of the motorway.

Stage 5:
The lamp post is in turn detached from the mast by crushing the concrete.

Step 6:
The mast is completely detached from its base. The base is then thoroughly cleaned.

Stage 7:
The concrete post and metal luminaire are removed from the site.
