Rescue
Westinghouse flashing lights
March 2021

In December 2020, the MuSé rediscovered abandoned Westinghouse flashing signals on the Boulevard Galilée in Seraing. It appears that these signals had not been working for more than 40 years.
Despite appearances, the lanterns were still in good condition, with the coloured glass lenses well preserved.

With the exception of the black paint, which had almost completely disappeared, the lanterns looked very good on visual inspection.
A search for an owner was then organised. The town of Seraing responded to our request. The signals were then dismantled by the municipal services and made available to the museum.
Two of the lanterns were repainted. We left a third lantern in its December 2020 condition.

The refurbishment has provided us with some wonderful and surprising surprises: the signal on the left has a horizontal lamp housed in the centre of an aluminium reflector, while the signal on the right has a vertical lamp without a reflector placed behind a Fresnel lens. This was an exceptional discovery, as we are probably looking at very old signals, particularly the one on the right.

It's a pure pleasure to see these signals working again...
